How this works in Alberta
Self-install works for many homes, but a professional install pays off when the dish needs a pole or roof mount clear of trees, a long cable run, or Wi-Fi extended to a shop, barn or second building. Ask installers about the mount, the cable route and weatherproofing, and how they will cover the outbuildings.
Alberta's Satellite Rebate Program has offered eligible rural and remote households a one-time rebate toward low-earth-orbit satellite hardware and installation. Check the current terms on our program guide before you buy.
This package is about getting the dish itself mounted, aimed and wired so it keeps working through an Alberta winter. Whole-property Wi-Fi to a shop or barn is a separate package (Starlink + Property Wi-Fi), and choosing between satellite and other services is covered under Rural Internet.
The main decision is where the dish goes. Starlink's specification sheet lists a 110-degree field of view, so the mount needs a clear view of the sky without trees, rooflines or grain bins in the way. The standard kit ships with a 15 m cable, which limits how far the dish can sit from the router unless a longer cable is bought. Pole, roof-ridge and wall mounts are all options; a pole mount can lift the dish above trees and avoids roof penetrations.
Winter matters. The specification sheet rates the dish to operate from -30 °C to 50 °C and to melt snow at up to 40 mm per hour, with average power use of 75 to 100 W. Snow-melt draws power, so plan the power supply location and cable path accordingly, and check the rated low temperature against your local winter extremes.
If your household qualifies, the Alberta Satellite Rebate Program can return up to $1,000 of the hardware, installation and taxes, provided you buy (not rent) the kit between August 11, 2026 and March 31, 2027. Keep every receipt and invoice: you apply after the first month of service.

Alberta rules and permits
- The Alberta Satellite Rebate Program pays a one-time rebate of up to $1,000 per eligible household toward low-earth-orbit (LEO) satellite internet hardware, installation services and supplies (such as mounting poles or brackets), and the applicable taxes on them. (Government of Alberta, Alberta Satellite Rebate Program)
- Eligible purchases must be made between August 11, 2026 and March 31, 2027, and applications must be submitted by March 31, 2027. (Government of Alberta, Alberta Satellite Rebate Program)
- Eligibility is for rural and remote households without access to high-speed broadband (50 Mbps down, 10 Mbps up, latency 50 ms or less) that are not served by a government-funded broadband expansion project. Owners and renters can apply; one rebate per household. (Government of Alberta, Alberta Satellite Rebate Program)
- Not covered: monthly service fees, monthly hardware rental fees, optional accessories such as Wi-Fi routers or extenders, purchases to connect a business, and purchases outside the program window. (Government of Alberta, Alberta Satellite Rebate Program)
- Hardware must be a purchased kit (not a rental) from an authorized vendor. The program page states that Starlink kits currently meet the requirements and that other suppliers may be added later. (Government of Alberta, Alberta Satellite Rebate Program)
- To apply: check the address on the program's eligibility map, register a verified Alberta.ca account, pay for hardware and installation upfront, and apply through the portal after the first month of service, with all eligible receipts and invoices plus direct deposit details. Mis-mapped addresses can be appealed with proof from the active providers in the area. (Government of Alberta, Alberta Satellite Rebate Program)
Sizing and planning
- One dish serves one service address. The kit's router is rated by Starlink for coverage of up to 297 m² (3,200 ft²); a larger house or outbuildings need the Property Wi-Fi package.
- Plan the cable route from dish to router within the supplied 15 m cable, or budget for a longer cable.
- Pick a mount that clears obstructions across the dish's 110-degree field of view, including tree growth over the next few years.

Common questions
Does a dish installation need a permit in Alberta?
This page's package data lists no permit as typically required. If the work adds a new electrical circuit or outlet for the power supply, an electrical permit applies, as it does to any electrical work; check with your municipality.
Can I claim the rebate on a promotional or rental kit?
Monthly hardware rental fees are excluded. The rebate covers a purchased kit from an authorized vendor, bought between August 11, 2026 and March 31, 2027.
When do I apply for the rebate?
After your first month of service, through the program portal with a verified Alberta.ca account, and no later than March 31, 2027.
Will snow stop it working?
Starlink rates the standard dish to melt snow at up to 40 mm per hour. Heavier snowfall, or a mount where snow drifts against the dish, can still cause outages, so placement matters.
