How this works in Alberta
Off-grid solar is how a site without a pole still runs. Size it for December, not the July brochure.
Off-grid solar in Alberta is sized on December, not July. Mid-winter irradiance is roughly a sixth of summer across most of the province, so a system that comfortably runs a cabin in summer can run short for weeks in winter. Most year-round off-grid homes pair solar with a battery bank and a generator.
Start from a load list in watt-hours per day, then size the battery for the days of autonomy you want and the array for the winter number in your county. Steep panel tilts shed snow and catch the low winter sun. Our county solar guides and the solar-by-county table give the summer and winter figures to plan with.
An off-grid system must carry the property through the darkest weeks of the year on its own. In Alberta that is the design problem: NRCan's indicative monthly values for Edmonton put December output at latitude tilt at about 58 kWh per kW of panels, against 120 in June. A system sized on annual averages will run short in winter.
Common responses are steeper panel tilt (in NRCan's Edmonton data, latitude +15° gives 63 kWh/kW in December), a larger array, a larger battery bank, cutting winter loads, and a generator for long cloudy spells. The package scope already includes generator integration for this reason.
Because there is no grid connection, the micro-generation process (Form A to a distribution owner, bi-directional meter, retail credits) does not apply. That process exists for connecting generation to the grid. The electrical work still needs a permit and inspection, and the AUC recommends certified electrical contractors for generating installations.
Keep electric heating, well pumps and other heavy loads in view during the load analysis. Electric space heating is a large winter load; consider another fuel for heat and size the system on what remains.
Typical cost in Alberta
Published off-grid prices are national estimates and vary widely with load and winter autonomy.

Sources disagree, partly because they assume different loads. Winter sizing for Alberta pushes toward the upper ranges. Compare quotes on the same load list.

Alberta rules and permits
- The micro-generation process sets out the steps for approval to connect micro-generation to the grid; it is administered by the distribution owner through Form A. (Alberta Utilities Commission, Micro-generation notice submission guideline (2026 edition))
- An electrical permit is required for any electrical work. Homeowners may pull the permit and do the work only if they own and live in the home and their municipality allows it; certified electrical workers are recommended. (Alberta Utilities Commission, Micro-generation notice submission guideline (2026 edition))
Sizing and planning
- Build a load list: each appliance's watts and daily hours, in winter conditions, including well pump, furnace blower, freezers and shop tools.
- Size the array on December output, not the annual average. NRCan's indicative December values at latitude tilt are about 52 kWh/kW in Grande Prairie, 58 in Edmonton, 66 in Calgary and 68 in Lethbridge.
- Size the battery for the days of autonomy you want without sun, and plan generator run-time for longer gaps.
- Size the inverter for the largest combined running load plus motor surge.

Common questions
Does off-grid solar work in Alberta winters?
Yes, with a larger array, a battery bank sized for several days and usually a backup generator. December output is a fraction of summer.
Do I need to tell the utility?
With no grid connection, the micro-generation notice to a distribution owner does not apply. You still need an electrical permit and inspection.
Can I do the wiring myself?
Only where your municipality allows homeowner permits for an owner-occupied home. The AUC strongly recommends certified electrical contractors.
Why is a generator usually included?
December solar output in Alberta is roughly half of June's in NRCan's data. A generator covers long cloudy or snowy periods without a much larger battery.
Is off-grid cheaper than connecting to the grid?
It depends on the quoted cost of bringing power to the site. Get a connection estimate from the local wire service provider and compare.
