How this works in Alberta
A battery bank covers the hours a well pump or freezer cannot miss. It is quieter than a generator and already there when the grid blinks.
Size a backup battery on the loads that matter in an Alberta outage: the well pump, furnace blower, freezer, sump pump and internet. Well pumps have a high starting surge, so check the inverter's surge rating, not just its continuous output.
Batteries can be charged from the grid, from solar or from a generator. For multi-day winter outages, a battery paired with a generator is usually cheaper and more reliable than a battery alone.
