Pond Siting and Slope on Alberta Acreages
A pond fails for boring reasons: it was cut on a slope that will not hold, it has no catchment, or it was dug in a wetland that should have been left alone. Slope is the first filter.
Read the land before you mark an X
Walk the property after snowmelt. Water already tells you where it wants to sit. A bench with a gentle backslope and a defined catchment above it is a candidate. A steep sidehill with a pretty view is a leak waiting for a liner budget.
Rules of thumb, not engineering:
- **Long, gentle slopes** can feed a pond if soils seal.
- **Convex noses** shed water and are poor sites.
- **Concave hollows** collect water — and may already be wetlands.
- **Valley bottoms** can hold water and can also be floodways.
Catchment versus clay
A large catchment on sand still leaks. A small catchment on tight till can hold a fire pond. Bring a shovel. If you hit gravel at a metre, plan for a liner or pick another hollow.
Keyline and contour thinking help you place the dam on the level, not across the fall line at a random angle. That is a design step after you know the slope band.
