How this works in Alberta
Bare ground after harvest loses soil and nitrogen. A cover crop holds both, feeds soil biology, and can double as fall grazing. The trick in Alberta is a short window: seed early enough to get growth before frost and pick a mix you can actually terminate.
Alberta's growing season leaves a narrow window after cereal or pulse harvest. Early-harvested crops such as peas, barley, or fall-cut silage give the best chance of real cover crop growth before hard frost. Later harvests usually call for winter-hardy or fast-establishing species, or for seeding into standing crop.
Match the mix to the job. Oats, peas, and radish-type mixes winterkill and are simple to manage. Fall rye or winter-hardy mixes overwinter and need a termination plan before the next crop. If you plan to graze the cover, fence and water it before you seed, not after.
