4R stands for right source, right rate, right time, right place. It is a planning framework, not a product. A good plan starts with soil tests, field history, and a realistic yield target, and ends with records you can hand to a program administrator.
Most gains come from small changes: banding rather than broadcasting, splitting applications on lighter or wetter soils, and adjusting rates by zone. Fall-applied nitrogen carries more risk than spring in wet years, so timing deserves a real conversation with your agronomist.
Nitrogen management is one of the practices the federal On-Farm Climate Action Fund has supported. Baseline records, such as previous rates and yields, are often required, so keep them.
