Water Act Approvals for Alberta Ponds
A pond can be a fire reserve, a livestock dugout, or a weekend project that becomes a file. The Water Act cares about whether you disturb a water body or change how water moves.
When to pause
- The hollow already holds water in spring
- Willows, sedges, or a mapped wetland sit on the stake-out
- You plan to ditch, dike, or culvert a drainage
- You are on a named creek, even if it is dry in August
Upland dugouts that do not capture a watercourse are a different conversation than enlarging a slough. Do not guess. A qualified practitioner and the current provincial guidance beat a neighbour’s 1998 story.
