How this works in Alberta
Silage is money in a pile. A bunker with solid walls, a sloped floor, and proper drainage protects the feed and keeps silage leachate off the land and out of water.
Leachate from fresh silage is high-strength and can harm water if it reaches a stream or shallow groundwater. Bunker floors should slope to a collection point, and clean runoff should be diverted away from the pile.
Wall height, width, and access determine how well you can pack and how much spoils at the face. Design around the equipment you own, not the equipment you might buy.
Bunkers for larger operations can trigger Alberta's manure and runoff rules under AOPA. Confirm with the NRCB or your county if your operation is close to a threshold.
